"Death Valley & Area"
Sunday Day 1 March 20 [L] [D]
Journey through the California desert landscapes in route to Ash Meadows, Nv. After a breakfast stop we arrive in Death Valley Junction just before the California – Nevada boarder. Here we will enjoy lunch & a show. Here, amid the flaking adobe ruins of the (still operating) Amargosa Hotel, resides the Amargosa Opera House, home for five decades to ballerina Marta Becket, a noted New York expatriate, and her one-woman show. Nearing 90, Becket is too frail these days to grace the stage she built with her own toil & toe shoes, but into the breach has come Jenna McClintock, best known for her years with the Oakland and Richmond (Va.) ballet companies, to perform Becket’s original works, pay homage to her enduring appeal & keep alive a Death Valley tradition. "I discovered ballet from Marta Becket when I was 6 years old & my family & I saw her perform." We will see the murals Marta painted on the walls & ceiling of the Inn & her Amargosa Opera House. After the show, we check into our hotel, get settled. Tonight is free to enjoy as you please. Freshen up for dinner, try your luck in the casino or just relax.
Monday Day 2 March 21 [B] [L] [D]
This Morning we head north and hear tales about the area as we pass places like Area 51, Beatty, Nv — etc. We tour Rhyolite ghost town. She was called the Queen City of Death Valley and at one time boasted a population of 10,000 people. Then we head down daylight pass through hells gate into mud canyon as your escort tells you tales of the 49ers. We will see the Sand Dunes and the Devils Cornfields in the Stove Pipe Wells area. In the northern part of Death Valley is a mansion often referred to as Scotty's Castle. The house was never completed and over $2.5 million was spent on it. All the original furnishings and clothing still remain there. Park Rangers in period clothing present 1939 living history tour of the Castle. We will also have time for a picnic lunch and to enjoy the grounds. Then we view Ubehebe Crater. [subject to road conditions] The top of the crater is nearly a half a mile across and is about 800 feet deep. You can get a glimpse of the different strata along the side of the crater from the view point.
Tuesday Day 3 March 22 [B] [L] [D]
Death Valley National Park has more than 3.3 million acres of spectacular desert scenery, interesting and rare desert wildlife, complex geology, undisturbed wilderness, and sites of historical and cultural interest. Zabriskie Point {our first stop today} is an elevated overlook of a colorful, undulating landscape of gullies and mud hills at the edge of the Funeral Mountains. From the viewpoint, the flat salt plains on the valley floor are visible in the distance. Furnace Creek is the heart of Death Valley National Park. Within a short distance (short by Death Valley standards), you will discover curios and historic artifacts that bring Death Valleys distant past to life. You also have the opportunity to taste the subtler attractions of the Valley: the vastness of 80-mile views and a quietness so intense that it rings in the ears. We will visit the Borax Works, Furnace Creek Visitors Center, take a brief tour of Furnace Creek Ranch, have lunch and visit the museum. Then it’s on to Badwater the lowest point (-282 feet) in the western hemisphere. Death Valley is unique because it contains the lowest, hottest, driest location in North America… Back to the hotel to relax or try your luck in the casino
Wednesday Day 4 March 23 [B] [L]
After breakfast we head south. Perched at the southeastern edge of Death Valley National Park is the small village of Shoshone. It is a piece of paradise in the vast Mojave Desert. A green oasis in a quaint atmosphere of yesteryear. Time for the museum that chronicles the local history of Death Valley and also has a unique collection of period items and an extensive collection of the minerals and rocks from the Death Valley area. There is also a gift shop and book store. The Shoshone Caves are one of the unheralded marvels of the Death Valley area. The caves, carved into the rock of nearby cliffs, served as the homes of Death Valley miners and prospectors during the early part of the 20th century. We will stroll to the area called Dublin Gulch to view the Caves. Onto China Ranch which is a family owned and operated small date farm, a lush piece of greenery amidst the forbidding Mojave Desert near Southern Death Valley. Imagine towering cottonwoods & willows by a wandering stream, date palms & abundant wildlife, all hidden away in some of the most spectacular scenery the desert has to offer. They sell home grown dates, as well as other offerings. Try some delicious date nut bread, muffins or cookies. You can buy some to take home or take home unique hand-crafted gifts. A farewell picnic lunch before heading home.
